Built for Wonder: Why We’re Bringing the Redwoods to the Playground

The "Why" Behind CK Nature Play

In a world dominated by screens, the 2025 Position Statement on Active Outdoor Play reminds us that active outdoor engagement is a fundamental right for a child's development. At CK Nature Play, we don’t just build playgrounds; we build "wonder spaces" designed to reconnect children with the physical world.

A 40-Year Heritage

Our story didn't start in a boardroom; it started in the redwoods of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Our founder, Alex Cartwright, grew up in those forests, brought there every summer by his father, Gary. Gary founded CK Landscape over 40 years ago, and today, that same spirit of craftsmanship and love for the outdoors lives in every project we touch.

Natural Materials vs. Plastic Equipment

Why boulders and timber instead of plastic and metal? Research shows that natural play environments spark 30% more physical activity and foster better problem-solving skills than traditional equipment.

  • Durability: High-quality wood like redwood can last for generations and is a renewable resource.

  • Safety: We have a Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) on staff to ensure every custom log and boulder meets rigorous ASTM standards.

  • Sustainability: We use sustainably sourced timber and innovative materials like Corkeen to ensure our impact on the planet is as positive as our impact on the kids playing.

Our Promise

From schools in the East Bay to public parks in San Francisco, we are dedicated to building inclusive, ADA-compliant spaces where every child can explore, climb, and grow.
